A Career Built Around Decisions
Martin Rust has spent his career working in environments where decisions carry real consequences.
He began in financial services with Merrill Lynch, serving as a Regional Manager and later as an International Manager based in New York. His work included mergers and acquisitions, deal structuring, financial management for ultra-high-net-worth clients and pension-style investing—an early education in how organizations assess risk, allocate capital and protect long-term value.
Those years also taught him that numbers are only part of the story. Behind every transaction and strategic decision are people with different priorities, tolerances for risk and definitions of success. Understanding those interests—and recognizing where they align—became central to his approach.
Following 9/11, Martin’s career moved far beyond the traditional financial world.
Working overseas on a U.S. State Department contract, he served across Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, including two years in Baghdad during the height of the war. These assignments deepened his understanding of governance, negotiation, institutional decision-making and the influence of culture, history and local realities.
They also reinforced a lesson that continues to shape his work:
A strategy may appear perfectly rational on paper. Its success ultimately depends on the people, systems and environment surrounding it.
Today, Martin’s Canadian practice operates at the intersection of government, national security, science, technology and business. He works with leaders confronting complex decisions—often where innovation is moving faster than the institutions, regulations or processes responsible for understanding it.
His experience across financial markets, international environments, government and emerging technology gives him a broader view of the decision. He understands that economics cannot be separated from political priorities, that technology cannot be considered without regulation and adoption, and that access alone rarely creates meaningful progress.
